Where to start…? This album is so varied that it’s difficult to know exactly how to describe it. I suppose it depends on how varied your musical tastes are whether you see this as a good or a bad thing. On one level, the music appears confused; the band not knowing what they are or how they would like to be perceived, although they probably don’t care. And on another, it is experimental and extreme prog rock which is essentially different, track by track and exciting in its variety.
Miocene’s album develops (and probably hopes to profit from) a current trend in merging different genres of music into rock, most obviously drum & bass in this instance. In addition possible influences are A Perfect Circle/Tool, System of a Down and Roni Size; but there’s an essence that also verges on the comic, in kind of a Goldie Lookin’ Chain way. At the same time however, there are darker moments a la Aphex Twin, heavy sampling, trance and there’s even some classical music thrown in for good measure.

‘A Perfect Life…’ is more soundtrack than album. It has its irritating glitches and moments, think unnecessary love scenes or experimental camera shots that just don’t work, but on the whole it is hypnotically enjoyable music to linger over.
