First of all, lets get this straight. Miocene are not Rap-Metal. This album is not Rap-Metal. So the band have Hip-Hop and Metal influences on this record, but there is so much more to their sound than POD-lite bollocks. The only track here that (to a narrow minded listener), could fall foul of that tag is opener ‘A Message From Our Sponsors’, but that’s only because, at one-and-a-half minutes, there is not much room for the usual experimentation.

I’ll summarise here, in saying that from tracks 2-9 the album is completely dominated by skittering break beats and ambient electronica. Picking up (apparently) where ‘02’s ‘Cellular Memory’ left off, this is where the album becomes truly fascinating and, of course, challenging.

Taking your listening ears on a truly headfucking journey through all the toil, trouble and anguish that the band have been through, it’s an overwhelmingly sincere section of the album, peaking with the astonishing ‘Apologetic Submissives’ .

The latter part of ‘A Perfect…’ follows along the same path until it’s conclusion at the end of 62 minutes, and you are left stunned and invigorated by the epic head-splatter you have just experienced.

A great album.
