londoners miocene always promised so much, but until now they’ve never really lived up to their true potential. any miocene fan expecting more the same offerings that were served up on last year’s “refining the theory” mini-album will be in for quite a shock.
the “cellular memory” EP is Miocene in full-on experimental wig-out mode. some may view this six-track (40mins) EP as self-indulgent arse, but those who know the band will be aware of their influences: massive attack, dj shadow and squarepusher to name just a few.
the brooding seven-minute “katie sierra” is simply stunning, with guitars barely audible in the mix. but all’s not well on “state of flux”, which finds vocalist ben edwards coming across as a second-rate maynard james keenan.
if you can overlook the minor points, then you have a thoroughly absorbing record, although it may not appeal to all tastes.
