it's hot, it's sweaty, it's packed, and a mist of nerves and excitement are in the air. this show, the first from the band for over a year, is not really a return, just yet, more of a showcase. still, it feels like a return, and it's been way too long since miocene graced a stage.

"did you fucking miss us?", well as the reaction to that comment made by vocalist ben edwards tells, yes they have. starting off with a great keyboard dominated intro, before hurling into their set. old classics "free reign" and "pure" are aired, a reminder of the why the songs shook venues all over the land. but it's in new songs like "dionysus" and "(untitled") that miocene's maturing process shines. a year off from the live circuit, i found myself questioning, whether they'd maybe left it a bit too long, but then common sense kicks in, nobody forgets a band like this quickly.

as muscians, the band have reached an even further level, ben's vocals are the best they've ever sounded, and graham's backing vocals sound a lot better as well. beneath all of the focus, the 'zone' and the passion, comedy still lies, introducing opener as "why emo sucks in 2003" and naming other songs after movie stars and politicians.

in short, miocene will be back, stronger than ever. and from what they've shown me and the other 150+ people in the barfly tonight, the up-coming album won't be leaving stereos when it appears. miocene - a band you can believe in.
