30.11.03 the monarch, camden dukester's meltdown

oh my god. where do i start? we all remember this band, coming out with their debut mini album a whole three years ago, and what since? tours, name checks and respect, and ripping the essex scene a new asshole. then nothing. what happened? who cares when they are this good. they've changed for a start since those eps, and all i can say is they cannot be compared to anyone.

the band start their set to a raucous of an applause and begin with a very creepy intro of statto-guitars and keyboards, before exploding into a pure rock fury. and the mood is set, but this is a whole new type of noise; some kind of monster.

there was a time when these were compared to tool for their longer songs and odd structures, but now, they make both them and their old songs sound like pop. this is obtuse forever-changing mind boggling... hmm... I don't know what to call it, they've invented something new! this is so special, as the bass keeps on rolling, the loud guitar keeps coming in and out and the vocals range from soaring sweeping melody to ratm-style rapid fire rap seamlessly, and even pure anger but at a quiet volume adding atmosphere. and the drums are unbelievable, he was always praised (by me) for being original, but now who won't play the same beat for 5 seconds, again forever changing, along with breakbeat drum n' bass style so fast and almost stabbing those skins. another clever part is for one its a feat that some songs are 10 minutes long and keep changing (?!?) and keeps your attention, but the shorter songs are towards the end, so it never gets dull.

that is only one part of the mindf**k: the other part is that this is done live: how the hell can they remember to do all these things and replicate them so tight? only one of the best bands around can pull it off. and maybe this is owed to the band being and staying unsigned: playing by their own rules there's no industry interference telling them what to do, and this has allowed them to be as weird and as wonderful as possible, and when you're seeing this live, that's what matters. they have become one of the best, again
