miocene are one of the bands who, along with raging speedhorn, earthtone9, lostprophets and many others, are leading the charge of the new wave of british metal bands. it's been said that they're better live than tool, and that if they were american they'd be selling out venues 10 times the size that they play, and one very famous metal magazine has said so few bad words about them that lead singer ben wrote in to slag off his own band so he could be the first to!

so, they've got fairly good credentials then. however, it's not until you actually listen to them that you realise how good they are. this, their debut EP, is longer than a lot of bands' full length albums. its six tracks take up a grand total of 50 minutes and 37 seconds; there ain't no three minute blasts here. in fact, the shortest song is around the five minute mark, very much like that of the aforementioned tool. and that's not the only tool comparison that can be made. songs like fits like that and shine are a cross between maynard james keenan's mob and the deftones, giving a unique, intellectual yet skull-pounding feel to the music.

it appears that miocene are fast becoming one of the best bands in british metal at the minute. this is certainly worth checking out.
