'REFINING THE THEORY' infernal - here it is then, probably the most talked about band to emerge from the very healthy london underground this year. besides a couple of tracks on organ radio compilations, this is the first anyone has really heard in a recorded state from the rather explosive miocene. 'refining the theory' is a six track forty-seven minute mini album from a band with all driving cutting creative power and musical vision of groundbreaking bands like korn and tool.

within it all they have that little something all of their own, that little something different that could only be from this side of the atlantic. album opener 'rivets' is probably their most obvious track, it's as near to an instant fix that miocene ever get.

there's a lot more than just a testosterone driven rush here and the smouldering progressive colour of '9mm high & rising' provides ample evidence of something to hang on to well beyond that first moment of encounter. some of it's bleak, some of it's very inward looking, almost a celebration of brooding silence and the noises insects make when they run over electric guitars, the noise that moths make when they hit the light.

miocene like to let their tracks breath, each one a potential epic of almost prog-rock proportions. of course there's plenty of crunch, we're still dealing in metal here, you could call it future metal (indeed the band have themselves) and refining the theory backs up all the talk, miocene have delivered their first real statement, if this is only a mini album, a first taste, then I can't wait for them to really go out and challenge.

miocene could well be the next step, the evidence is here on refining the theory.
